It all started with a sketch... Bird Cage Experiment Part1

When I was doing The Sketch of The Week I came up with this sketch and had no clue what to do with it.

I drew a different version for the blog post but I kept looking at the original for some inspiration for a final piece. At the same time I was asking myself "what can I do with all these ceramic tiles?" (received a bunch of tiles in different sizes from a family whose child went to the school I was student teaching at the time.

Then it came... I was going to use it for an illustration I was going to do about how economics can put limits on creativity.

After doing the drawing and the color and value studies to figure out what I wanted to do then came the fun part.

For me taking risks and salving creative problems is the most fulfilling part of being an artist, even if the piece doesn't come out the way I originally planned I enjoy learning from the experiments I do in my studio. For this piece I started it like a normal gouache painting. After the paint for the background was dry I took the tiles and positioned them where I wanted them drew my second bird on the tiles with a pencil. Finally I took a some acetate and a gold paint marker and drew the cage on it then glued it to the tiles around the edges of the painting.
